Q. Can you please tell me if tomatoes will cause an increase in blood
sugar levels? I know they are a fruit and have some carbs in them but are they bad for me?
A. The American Diabetes Association actually lists tomatoes as a
vegetable. Per their Exchange Lists for Meal Planning booklet, 1 cup
raw tomato contains 5 grams carbohydrate and 25 calories.
A side note, tomatoes also contain a phytochemical called lycopene.
Lycopene may help to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and heart
disease.
